On Thursday, 11.12.2025, we organized a Zero Waste event as part of the ECO-CUISINE project in the premises of OZARA Slovenija. The event was specifically designed for participants of OZARA’s programs—persons experiencing long-term mental health difficulties.

The event took place in a welcoming and supportive environment, combining learning, creativity, and practical action, with the shared goal of reducing kitchen waste and promoting more responsible food practices.

In the introductory session, we presented the core objectives of the ECO-CUISINE project, which promotes sustainable culinary practices, food waste reduction, and the reuse of materials that are too often perceived as waste. Particular attention was given to the issue of used cooking oil—one of the most frequently improperly disposed kitchen wastes. Participants learned about the environmental consequences of pouring oil down the drain and how small changes in daily habits can significantly contribute to water protection and reduced pressure on sewage systems.

Waste is not the end of the story. With knowledge, creativity, and responsible habits, it can become a valuable resource and a concrete step toward a more sustainable future.

The central part of the event was a hands-on workshop on making scented candles from used cooking oil. Under professional guidance, participants learned about oil filtration, wick preparation, fragrance selection, and safe pouring techniques. Each participant created their own candle to take home—a symbol of sustainable thinking and proof that materials can be given a second life.

The event also provided space for open discussion about everyday kitchen practices: meal planning, proper food storage, creative use of leftovers, and reducing packaging waste. Participants exchanged practical tips and good practices that they can immediately apply in their daily lives.

This Zero Waste event once again demonstrated that sustainability is not an abstract concept, but a mindset reflected in everyday decisions. By combining environmental education with social inclusion and empowerment, the ECO-CUISINE project contributes both to ecological awareness and community well-being.
